The Project: The client wished to standardize and improve a series of core skills across their whole organization. CogBooks allowed them to provide a universal learning and job support environment, with the emphasis on delivering tools and job aids supported by learning content, in place of extended training courses. In this example, the customer provided CogBooks with their existing learning materials and training courses in a variety of formats from printed documents to pdf files and Power-Point presentations.CogBooks carried out a full conceptual analysis, breaking the materials down into their conceptual elements and editing the content to ensure that the explanations were consistent with the conceptual framework. As part of the analysis phase, we removed duplication within topics and also identified common elements across topics. ROI Scenario 1 Blended Learning Reduces Instructor-led Training Costs We look at a typical instructor-led training course in which 300 employees are trained in fifteen classes of twenty over the period of a year. Using a course of two days duration as our starting point, we introduce CogBooks as part of a blended learning solution allowing us to decrease the number of live training days from two to one. Basic ROI: Materials and Instruction Fees A fee of $400 per head for the instructor-led training is assumed that reduces to $200 per head plus a CogBooks license fee of $90 per head when the training course is reduced to one day (the CogBooks license gives the user access to the training on-line 24/7 throughout the year). An additional cost saving is realized by replacing printed course materials costing $15 per head with the CogBooks web-based materials. Travel and Expenses It is assumed that 50% of the course attendees travel to the course, There is a saving of 50% on hotel and subsistence costs when the course is reduced from two days to one day. Travel is assumed to cost $150 per delegate and hotel and subsistence $150 per delegate per day. The Basic cost saving in year one is from $190k to $160k, excluding initial investment in content development. Therefore, basic ROI is achieved within the first year if the initial content development cost is less than $30k. In subsequent years, cost savings continue to be realized at the same levels. Opportunity Cost ROI If we now add the impact of opportunity cost at $400 per employee per day, the full overall cost of training to the company becomes $490k per annum. $120k opportunity costs can be saved on days spent in the training room, and when added to the basic savings, this reduces the total cost to the business to $343k per annum, a saving of over 30% per annum. These savings are achieved on an on-going basis. ROI Scenario 2 Certifying Internal Trainers Here, we use the same assumptions as scenario one, but add in the impact of using CogBooks to support certification of internal trainers to provide the instructor-led training sessions. This saves costs in two ways: 1) Reduced instructor fees and 2) Reduced delegate travel, as the instructors are located in different regions. Basic ROI: Trainer Costs and Instruction Fees There is an initial investment of $5000 per trainer for certification and an annual "Presenter License' for each instructor of $1500. Internal instructors are charged at $600 per day, replacing the external trainer fees. We assume four internal trainers are certified. Travel and Expenses 0% of the course delegates have to travel to the course as instructors are available locally. Combined with the cost-reductions described in scenario one, the basic cost saving in year one is from $190k to $90k, excluding initial investment in content development. Basic ROI is achieved within the first year if the initial content development cost is less than $100k. Opportunity Cost ROI If we now add the impact of opportunity cost at $400 per employee per day, this scenario reduces the total cost to the business from $490k to $210k per annum.
