Celebrating a new partnership in Adaptive Learning Education Technology
Who are OpenStax and CogBooks?
OpenStax has been publishing free, peer-reviewed, openly licensed textbooks for introductory college courses since 2012. A non-profit organization, OpenStax’s mission is to improve student access to education and break down the most common barriers to learning, whilst empowering students and instructors. The selection of peer reviewed Open Educational Resource (OER) textbooks cover a range of subjects, including Math, Sciences and Humanities and are currently used by colleges across the United States.
“OpenStax is committed to increasing access to education with our free textbooks, which includes offering educators and students many additional resource options at the lowest possible cost,” said David Harris, editor in chief for OpenStax. “We’re excited to partner with CogBooks because they also share our goals of advancing learning science, sharing data and providing technologies that enable educators and students.”
CogBooks aim to transform modern higher education – the way the subjects are taught, and the way the students learn. By partnering with OpenStax, CogBooks is using OpenStax content to create powerful, insightful tools for teachers and a personalized, engaging learning experience for every student.
What does the partnership mean for Higher Education?
The opportunities created by the new partnership for learners and educators are limitless. By applying CogBooks’ advanced adaptive learning system to OpenStax’s easy to read, well researched textbooks, static materials become a whole new experience. The courseware is intuitive and enables the user to explore deeper aspects of the subject, and can channel the learning journey so that those with additional needs are supported, whilst those with a solid understanding of topics save time by not having to re-hash topics. This allows for an engagement with a subject that goes beyond traditional textbooks and lectures.
The technology includes the development of smart instructor tools and analytical data which give faculty members a deep and vital insight into each student’s experience.
When will Higher Education leaders start to see the benefits of OpenStax and CogBooks working together?
In collaboration with Arizona State University, CogBooks has taken the OpenStax titles U.S History and Biology and brought them to life with adaptive tools and data analytics. By using this Adaptive Courseware for a more a personalized teaching approach, ASU instructors were able to increase student success and retention by 24% and 90% respectively.
This means that institutions have a complete and successfully working courseware that can be integrated into established biology and history courses immediately. For a clearer idea of the innovative courseware, have a look at the history and biology courses in action.
