Learn more about Natural Resources

This adaptive courseware encompasses the global use and preservation of natural resources. Students will start by identifying the basics of ecology and develop their understanding of specific resources throughout the course, including the challenges facing natural resource quality, management and conservation today. Natural resources studied in this course include soil, forests, fish and wildlife, water and energy.

This module introduces students to the study of natural resources by providing the foundational ecological knowledge needed to understand the complex relationships within natural resource management. Students will discover how natural resources relate to ecosystem functions and services while gaining vocabulary that will be useful throughout the course.

Soil is a massive complex structure that builds the foundation for human lives. In this module, students will learn to identify soil types and devise a soil management plan to minimize erosion and maximize biodiversity, plant productivity and topsoil formation. Students will also learn to assess the economic impact of mineral extraction on a range of economies.

Forests are full of biodiversity and provide many ecosystem services. This module explores forest natural resources and how their complex relationship with climate change affects strategies and creates challenges for sustainable forest management. Students will also investigate the impact and prevention of wildfires.

Water is essential for all life on Earth and is a critical regulator in climate. While water covers as much as 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, only about 1 percent is available for human use. In this module, students will discover various types of water along with their sources and uses. Students will also learn to distinguish between types of pollution and evaluate the effects of different water uses on quality and quantity.

This module examines ecosystems that allow for the survival of fish and wildlife and humanity’s impacts on those ecosystems, both positive and negative. Students will discover effective conservation and management practices to prevent climate change and habitat loss or pollution.

This module examines different types of energy people use every day to produce electricity, transportation, heat and more. Students will learn to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different types of energy and determine if they come from renewable or nonrenewable sources.

This module concludes the study of natural resources by examining humanity’s impact on land, soil, water, air and the climate. Students will explore the effects of population growth, unequal distribution and use of natural resources around the globe while considering what steps need to be taken to restore the planet for future generations.
